UAE Candidate Stalls in UN Leadership Race Amid Sudan War Controversy

NEW YORK | November 6, 2026 — TNRTPS NEWS

The United Arab Emirates' candidate for UN Secretary-General, Lana Nusseibeh, has failed to gain additional support in the eighth informal Security Council vote, remaining in fourth place.

Nusseibeh received seven votes encouraging her candidacy, six discouraging votes, and two expressing no opinion, unchanged from the previous round.

Costa Rica's Rebeca Grynspan strengthened her lead with twelve supporting votes.

Sudanese political adviser Dr. Amgad Fareid has publicly challenged Nusseibeh's candidacy, citing allegations of UAE involvement in Sudan's devastating war and support for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The UAE denies providing military assistance to the RSF.

The results highlight continuing diplomatic resistance to the Emirati candidate. However, the vote was preliminary, and no final selection has been made.
